POLPERRO SEWAGE WORKS, CORNWALL

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project came to fruition through the close collaboration between CCP and the main contractor where both parties actively strove to find a solution to building a sewage treatment works on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea with no land vehicular access.

The method chosen to construct the building was CCP’s crosswall construction where wall sections could come complete to site and be craned into position from the sea. They would then be simply ‘stitched’ together at the joints creating
a monolithic structure.

PROJECT DETAIL

This method minimised the amount of fresh material
on site as batching and distributing fresh concrete
was extremely difficult.

The building was designed
to blend in with the external environment and so CCP
used a rubber formliner system
in the moulds to replicate a rock face pattern.

The complexity of the contract has been reflected in the fact that it won the ICE Major Project of the year for the south west.
